Self-Defense Seminar

About Us

The Introductory Self-defense Course for Women is a free program provided by The Kaizen Gōjūkan, Sensei Eugene Kitney, and the Arlington Seventh-day Adventist Church, Lewisville Campus, that teaches realistic self-defense tactics and techniques. It is taught by certified instructor/s. This Introductory course begins with awareness education, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, and progresses to the basics of hands-on defense training. Although students will learn defense strategies, this is not a martial arts program. Courses are open individuals ages 15 and older. (12-14 years of age will be accepted with parental consent due to the mature nature of the material)

Some FAQ's to help you prepare

How is this class instructed?
The course begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing to the basics of hands-on defense training. This course may for some be physically and psychologically demanding. The training that we offer includes the use of pads blockers, which allow the students to experience, practice and learn what it is like to strike the aggressor in a realistic situation.

Do I need any prior experience to attend this class? Do I need to be in top physical shape to participate?
No. This program is designed for the average person with no previous experience or background in physical skills training.

What should I wear for class?
Please remember that this is an interactive self-defense course. Students may wear loose-fitting clothing, workout clothing, or street clothes. Please do not wear open-toed shoes or heels. Athletic shoes are preferred, or you may even go barefooted.

Should I warm up prior to the program?
A Good Warm-Up Prior to All Self-Defense Classes is highly recommended. We will do some warm-ups as we get started. As with every physical training technique you need a good warm up before you get down to the real class. When you go to the gym you do some warm up on the treadmill before you start on the weights, right? All self-defense classes should begin with a good warm-up that will get your mind and muscles in the right spot for training. Expect to do some simple jumping jacks, jogging, squats, push-ups and other warm up exercises during the warm-up session of your class.

What about kicking and punching?
Some Real Punching and Kicking will take place. Self-defense involves real kicking and punching. This is the core of a self-defense class. Expect to do a lot of this during the training. Don’t get scared and back out of class. There will be an instructor to show you exactly what to do, no need to worry. Here you will be taught how to protect yourself from getting kicked and punched as well as how to use kicks and punches to deflect an attacker.

What else?
Basic Self Protection Elements will be covered besides kicking and punching. There are other basic elements of self-defense you should expect to learn from your class. These include:

  • How to spot an attacker or tell if a situation is dangerous as soon as possible
  • How to defuse a dangerous situation
  • Physical techniques you can use to fight off an attacker

If you’re training in a group session, expect a sense of community. Self-defense training is not just about the physical act of learning how to protect yourself. There are so many other non-physical benefits of a self-defense course including learning how to interact with other people. You will be training with other people so expect to be part of a community that supports, protects and respects each other.
